Car AC Gas Refill in Dubai: Price, How Often & What a Proper Refill Includes

A car AC gas refill in Dubai typically costs AED 120–200 for a basic regas. A full service with leak testing costs AED 200–350, and premium packages run AED 350–600. Cars on the newer R1234yf gas cost more. A sealed AC system should not need gas every year. If yours keeps losing cooling, there's a leak that has to be found and fixed first.
Key Takeaways
- •Your AC doesn't "use up" gas. Low gas almost always means a leak somewhere in the system.
- •A proper refill removes the old gas, holds the system under vacuum, checks for leaks, then recharges by exact weight. A quick "top-up" skips most of that.
- •Check which gas your car uses: R134a (mostly older cars) or R1234yf (most newer cars). The two cannot be mixed.
- •In Dubai's 45 °C+ summers, a slightly undercharged system feels much worse than it would in a mild climate.
How much does a car AC gas refill cost in Dubai?
Prices vary with your car, the gas type and how much testing is included. Typical Dubai market ranges for 2026:
| Service level | Typical price (AED) | What's usually included |
|---|---|---|
| Basic gas refill / top-up |
Three things push the price up:
- R1234yf gas. Most cars built from around 2017 onward use R1234yf, which costs far more per kilogram than R134a and needs a dedicated machine.
- System size. Large SUVs and cars with rear AC units hold more gas.
- Leak repair. If a hose, O-ring, condenser or compressor seal is leaking, that repair comes before any recharge.
At Royal Garage Dubai you get a written, itemised estimate to approve before any work starts, so you know which of these applies to your car.
How often should you refill car AC gas?
In a healthy, sealed system, you shouldn't need to. A car AC is a closed loop: the same refrigerant circulates for years. Some workshops advertise a regas every 12–18 months. That interval works for cars that lose a small amount of gas over time, but losing enough to feel the difference within a year means there's a leak.
| Situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling slowly weakens over 2–3 years |

What does a proper AC gas refill include?
A proper refill is a measured, multi-step service. Here is what happens on our machine, step by step:
- Performance check. We measure the vent outlet temperature and read the high- and low-side pressures to see if gas is really the problem.
- Recovery. The machine pulls out all the remaining refrigerant and weighs it. This tells us exactly how much was missing.
- Vacuum. The system is held under deep vacuum, typically for 20–30 minutes. This boils off moisture, which would otherwise turn into acid and attack the compressor.
- Leak test. If the vacuum doesn't hold, there's a leak. We trace it with UV dye, an electronic detector or a nitrogen pressure test.
- Recharge by weight. We add the exact amount of gas and compressor oil listed on the specification label under your bonnet. Most passenger cars take roughly 400 g to 1 kg.
- Final test. We re-check the pressures, vent temperature and compressor cycling with the engine at idle and at higher revs.
Why a cheap "top-up" often fails
A top-up adds gas to whatever is already in the system without measuring it. That causes two problems:
- Overcharging. Too much gas raises the pressure, reduces cooling and strains the compressor.
- Undercharging. Too little leaves the AC weak in peak heat.
A top-up also hides the leak, so you pay again a few weeks later.

Signs your car AC needs gas, not a repair
Low gas usually shows up as:
- Air that is cool but not cold, especially at idle in traffic
- Cooling that slowly gets worse over weeks
- A hissing sound from the dashboard when the AC is switched off
- The compressor clutch clicking on and off rapidly
- Oily residue on AC pipe joints (refrigerant carries oil out with it)
If instead your AC is blowing hot air, smells musty, makes a grinding noise, or shows a warning light, the problem is probably a component, not gas. Our guide to the 5 signs your car AC needs repair covers those symptoms.
R134a or R1234yf: which gas does your car use?
Check the sticker under the bonnet, usually on the slam panel or radiator support. It names the refrigerant type and charge weight.
As a rule of thumb, cars designed before about 2013 use R134a. Most cars built from 2017 onward, including nearly all new European models, use R1234yf. The two gases use different service ports and must never be mixed. We explain the differences in a separate guide.
